Marbled Paper - Payhembury

Marbled Paper - Payhembury

A collection of traditional hand marbled papers, made in Scotland by Kate Brett of Payhembury Marbled Papers. Through several centuries, people have been using marbled papers as part of art and craft projects. With care and skill patterns are matched but part of their charm is that each print is absolutely unique. Since 1982 Payhembury Marbled Papers has specialised in trying to reproduce some of the old marbled paper patterns in the traditional manner, floating water-based paints on a size made from carragheen moss which is then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface of paper. Traditional papers were often highly polished with beeswax and an application of 50% beeswax / 50% white spirit on the papers before use is recommended (although not essential). This enhances the colour as well making them more durable.

Pattern Papers - Florentine

Pattern Papers - Florentine

Carta Varese designs have their origins in Renaissance Italy and traditional Italian woodblock printed papers. Nowadays they are offset printed in Florence. The printing process is quite elaborate. The two-way & multi-coloured papers are printed in a single colour machine. Every colour is printed separately, a method reminiscent of silk-screen printing. This process results in colours that are bright and dense despite being an offset print. These high quality papers are suitable for a wide variety of applications from wrapping paper to bookbinding (covers & endpapers), box making, origami, lining furniture and doll's houses. It is also often used in collage and card making projects.

Pattern Papers - Heritage

Pattern Papers - Heritage

'Pattern paper', has a long history, leading from 18th century Italy to 1920s London, where the famous Curwen Press revived the tradition of decorative binding papers using repeating patterns. They commissioned young artists such as Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden.

In the 1980s, Judd Street Gallery had the idea of reviving this tradition. Although the gallery is now only a publishing business, with no public presence, they have kept the range of papers going with new additions, and a cross-over with the Pollock’s Toy Museum Trust.
